Menopause Weight Gain and Belly Fat
Eating the same and gaining anyway, mostly around the middle, is one of the most frustrating parts of midlife. Hormones are part of the picture.
Why it happens
Why weight shifts to the middle
As estrogen declines, the body tends to store more fat around the abdomen instead of the hips and thighs. Muscle mass also drops with age, which lowers the number of calories you burn at rest. Poor sleep from night sweats raises hunger hormones, and stress adds to it.
Belly fat is not just cosmetic. It is linked to higher risk of diabetes and heart disease, which makes it worth addressing.

Treatment options
Can hormone therapy help with weight?
HRT is not a weight-loss treatment, and studies have not shown that it causes weight gain. By easing night sweats, improving sleep and supporting muscle, balanced hormones can make healthy habits easier to keep. We also check thyroid, blood sugar and other labs that affect weight. For women who need more help, we offer menopause weight loss with GLP-1 medication.
When symptoms are driven by falling or fluctuating estrogen and progesterone, hormone replacement therapy for women may help. Options include bioidentical estradiol, progesterone and, for some women, low-dose testosterone, delivered as creams, patches, pills or EvexiPEL hormone pellets. Women who still have a uterus need progesterone along with estrogen.
We treat weight gain and belly fat for patients from Kingwood, The Woodlands, Porter, Humble and across the Lake Houston area at our New Caney office. Your first visit starts with lab work and a real conversation about your symptoms.
Questions
Common questions
Does HRT cause weight gain?
Research has not shown that HRT causes weight gain. Some women notice mild fluid retention when they start, which usually settles.
Why is belly fat so hard to lose after 40?
Lower estrogen, less muscle, poorer sleep and stress hormones all push fat storage toward the abdomen. Strength training and sleep are two of the most effective levers.
