The science

What is a GLP-1?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone your gut releases after eating. It tells your brain you are full, slows how quickly your stomach empties and helps your pancreas release insulin when blood sugar rises.

GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone, and some, like tirzepatide, also act on a second hormone called GIP. The result is less hunger, fewer cravings and smaller portions without constant willpower.

Why medical supervision matters

GLP-1 weight loss medications are generally prescribed for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. We confirm eligibility with a medical evaluation and labs.

We prescribe and monitor GLP-1 weight loss medication for patients from Kingwood, The Woodlands, Porter, Humble and across the Lake Houston area at our New Caney office. Your first visit includes a full evaluation and labs.

Safety first. GLP-1 medications are not right for everyone. They should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, or during pregnancy, and they need caution with a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease. Dr. Bernell reviews your history and labs before prescribing and monitors you throughout. Read more about GLP-1 side effects.
