Questions
Hormone therapy, pellets and our practice
What is hormone replacement therapy?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) restores hormones that have declined with age, menopause or other causes. For women this is usually estrogen and progesterone, sometimes with testosterone. For men it is testosterone.
What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?
Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones your body makes. They are available as pellets, creams, gels, patches, injections and pills. See our treatment options.
Is hormone replacement therapy safe?
HRT has benefits and risks that depend on your age, health history and the type of hormone. For many healthy women under 60 or within about 10 years of menopause, the benefits for bothersome symptoms generally outweigh the risks. It is not right for everyone. Dr. Bernell reviews your history and labs before recommending treatment.
How do I know if my symptoms are hormonal?
Symptoms like fatigue, poor sleep, weight gain and low mood have many possible causes. Lab testing and a full history help separate hormone problems from thyroid issues, low iron, sleep disorders and medication effects.
Do I need lab work?
Yes. Treatment decisions and dosing are based on your lab results, and follow-up labs keep treatment safe.
What are EvexiPEL pellets?
Small bioidentical estradiol or testosterone pellets placed under the skin that release hormone steadily for several months. Learn more about EvexiPEL pellet therapy.
How long do hormone pellets last?
Often three to four months for women and four to six months for men. Follow-up labs guide timing.
Does pellet insertion hurt?
The area is numbed first. Most patients feel pressure, then mild soreness for a few days.
Are pellets FDA approved?
No. Hormone pellets are compounded medications and are not FDA approved. We discuss this and other options with every patient.
What is the difference between EvexiPEL and Biote?
Both are hormone pellet programs using bioidentical hormones. They differ in training, dosing approach and support. elev8HRT offers EvexiPEL.
Can women take testosterone?
Yes, in low doses that are carefully monitored. It may help with libido and energy for some women.
Can I start HRT during perimenopause?
Yes. Many women begin during perimenopause. See perimenopause and menopause care.
Will testosterone therapy affect fertility?
Yes. Testosterone therapy can lower sperm production. Men who want to have children should discuss this before starting.
What are signs of low testosterone?
Fatigue, low libido, erectile changes, muscle loss, weight gain and low mood are common. See testosterone therapy.
